The Town of Perth is committed to providing safe, reliable, and high-quality water and sewer services to our community. Explore our storm sewer system, learn about seasonal maintenance activities, find answers to your frequently asked questions, and access important documents like our drinking water reports.

Storm Sewer System

Our storm sewer system is designed to manage rainwater and snow melt, directing excess water away from roads, homes, and businesses to prevent localized flooding. This network of catch basins, storm drains, and outfalls works together to keep conditions safe during heavy rains and snow melts. The system moves water that naturally drains into the Tay River and provides a level of treatment to clean stormwater before it returns to the river.

Residents can help by keeping storm drains clear of leaves and debris and disposing of hazardous materials responsibly to prevent contamination.

Seasonal Maintenance Activities

To keep our water and sewer systems functioning effectively, we conduct regular maintenance activities throughout the year:

  • Hydrant Flushing: Performed twice a year in spring and fall, hydrant flushing removes sediment buildup to ensure clean, safe drinking water and verifies hydrants are operational for fire safety. Residents may experience temporary discolouration or a drop in pressure. If this happens, run your taps until the water clears.

  • Valve Turning: Each fall, we turn system valves to maintain proper water flow and distribution and to allow isolation of specific areas for repairs as needed.

  • Sewer Flushing: Sewer flushing is done every spring to prevent blockages and ensure smooth flow, reducing potential issues. Residents may notice some noise or water movement in pipes during this process.

  • Catch Basin Cleaning: Each fall, we clean catch basins to remove accumulated debris, such as sand and leaves, that could obstruct water flow and contribute to localized flooding.
