Animal Services

Many of us rely on animal services to help care for our beloved pets—whether they’re dogs, cats, rabbits, or other furry, feathered, or scaled friends. Our Animal Control By-law is here to protect pets, promote responsible pet ownership, and keep our community safe from encounters with uncontrolled animals and wildlife.

If you have a lost or missing pet or need animal care and control services, contact our Animal Control and By-law Enforcement Officer, Laura Lowson, at 613-812-5609 or by email.

Impounded dogs will be taken to Municipal Pound Provider Andrew Parent, located at 810 Pelton Road, Kemptville. Contact by phone at 613-204-7479 or by email.

Impounded cats will be taken to the Lanark Animal Welfare Society (LAWS) facility at 253 Glenview Road, Smiths Falls. Contact by phone at 613 283-9308 or by email.

Animal licences are available at the Front Counter at Town Hall (80 Gore Street East). Both cats and dogs must be licensed.

  • Fee: $18.95
  • Dogs must be licensed every year. Licences are valid for the calendar year (January 1–December 31), unless otherwise revoked (By-law 3557, section 2.1.6).
  • Cats only need a one-time licence, which is valid for their entire lifetime.

Fees are waived for microchipped dogs (By-law 3557, section 2.1.9) or certified CNIB guide dogs (By-law 3557, section 2.1.11). Please provide the required documentation when applying or renewing tags.

Abuse and neglect of animals is not tolerated in Ontario. If you believe an animal is in distress or being abused, call 1-833-9-ANIMAL (264625). This includes any animal, such as pets, farm animals, or wildlife in captivity, that:

  • Is injured, in pain, sick, suffering, or abused
  • Lacks proper care, water, food, or shelter

Animal Welfare Services (AWS) within the Ministry of the Solicitor General enforces the Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act. Provincial inspectors, including those with specialized expertise, handle inspections, respond to concerns, and provide education on animal care best practices.

Calls to AWS are answered by the Ontario Animal Protection Call Centre at 1-833-9-ANIMAL (264625), available 24/7.

No pet may roam off-leash in any area other than the pet owner's residence. We are working towards creating an off-leash dog park at Darou Farm.

Please be a responsible pet owner - have your pet spayed or neutered!

To report a dead animal located on a town street or other public property, call 613-267-3311 ext. 0 or report it through our form.

We do not have a pest control department. Residents and businesses should contact a private wildlife or pest control service.
